"Radio Up!"

June 28, 2014
Lyn Kramer

When I was about 12 years old, I participated in the College For Kids summer program, hosted by Santa Fe College. It was not only an educational experience, but also a memorable one. I learned, I grew, I had fun! I took classes like photography, which has always been a passion of mine, along with cooking and even singing. When Cheryl Canova, the SFC Andrews Center director, asked me to teach Jr. College For Kids, I literally jumped at the opportunity! I get to go to College For Kids again?! What?! I could not say no, which is probably why I agreed to teach both programs, Jr. College For Kids and College For Kids. About 35 students participated in the former, and they had such a blast in classes like "Let's Party," "Experiments In Candy Land" and, of course, "Radio Up!" In "Radio Up," the class I taught, the kids created and recorded their own radio show, which included local news, the weather forecast and music of their choosing. They spent the second half of the week at the radio station, where they received a tour and interviewed with Chuck Kramer on the morning show. Each child will receive a copy of the recorded radio show they created in class, which is a souvenir that they will have forever. The College For Kids programs are not only fun, but also true learning experiences for kids of all ages. I swear, the instructors have just as much, if not more, fun than the kids! College For Kids begins Monday, July 7 and runs for two weeks.
